The 26th of January saw the release of “La palabra ambigua. Los intelectuales en España, 1889-2019”, written by project researcher David Jiménez Torres and published by Taurus.
The book reviews the discourses on the figure of the intellectual in Spain from the first uses of this word as a noun to the present day. It analyses the persistent polysemy of this term and examines the debates that have arisen around the function and characteristics of intellectuals during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the Second Republic, the Franco regime, the Transition… It also analyses the changing relationship between the concept of the intellectual and certain ideals of masculinity and femininity, as well as comparisons between the Spanish intelligentsia and that of other countries. It also addresses the changes in the discourses on the intellectual that have taken place since the 2008 crisis.
