The Spanish Transition of the 1970s “from below”: Centering the Role of Social Movements

The Spanish Transition to democracy served for many years as the model of a top-down transition negotiated by the so-called “elite pact”.
This classic framework has been challenged by a wealth of studies that have placed social movements and popular mobilization in the center of the analysis, although the “elite pact” has persisted in public memory. The seminar will explore various approaches to the “transition from below” and the role of social movements in understanding the process of democratization.
